1881 EAST COAST FISHING DISASTER To commemorate Britain’s worst fishing disaster when 189 were drowned in a single afternoon, on 14th October 1881, memorials representing the exact numbers of surviving widows and children were commissioned for four of the communities affected, Cove, St Abbs, Eyemouth and Burnmouth. Fund-raising continues for the Eyemouth piece, the worst affected. The figures are approximately 15cm high and the bases 1.4m. |
